What is the Adult Autism Strategy?
     
Autistic adults   The autism strategy is a plan to help adults with autism have better lives.
     
parliament   It was written by the government.
     
Documents   The plan is for adults with autism in England.
     
What does the strategy say?
     
parliament   The plan says what the government will do.
     
council   The plan also says what council and health services should do.
     
Documents   There are five parts to the strategy.
     
Part 1 of the Adult Autism Strategy
     
person covering ears   Part 1 is about making sure people know about autism. Everyone should know a little bit about autism
     
training session   Some people need to know more about autism:
  • People in health services
  • People who work in Social Services
  • People who work at the Job Centre
  • People who work for the police or prison service.

computer on the internet   The government has said there will be courses on the internet to find out about autism and how to help.
     
leaflet   There will also be posters, booklets and short films.
     
Part 2 of the Adult Autism Strategy
     
assessment   Part 2 is about how adults can find out if they have autism.
Every local area should have a plan for how people can find out if they have autism.
     
assessment   If someone is told they have autism, social services should see if they need support.
Social services should also see if any carers need support.
     
Part 3 of the Adult Autism Strategy
     
person growing up   Part 3 is about adults with autism getting the right support and services.
     
different methods   Services sometimes need to make changes so that people with autism can use their services in the same way as other people.

Part 5 of the Adult Autism Strategy

Every area should work with people with autism and their carers and families to write the plan.
     
Making the strategy happen
     
Parliment   The government has written rules about making the strategy happen. This tells councils what they should and must do.
