Living with a disability, like Autism, Learning Difficulty or a physical disability

Young disabled woman playing drumsHaving a disability can be restricting in all sorts of ways; getting a job, access to shops and businesses, using the internet, education and learning. Indeed, doing the things that most people take for granted can be difficult. We try to remove the barriers that prevent people with disabilities having full access to our services. This page contains information on:

Disability information point

In Wiltshire people with disabilities and their families raised the need for a single information point to guide people to appropriate services and support, so the information below has been compiled. If you have any comments about this list, suggestions for links, or advice that would help other disabled people, please contact us.

E-Learning

Wiltshire has a package of e-learning resources provided by Kwango. If you work in a public sector organisation in Wiltshire and would like access to any of these e-learning courses please contact learning@wiltshire.gov.uk

Supporting people with disabilities to live in the way they wish

Wiltshire Council is currently developing a Care and Support Accreditation Scheme to replace the existing Care and Support Framework.

We anticipate that this will include a much larger number of providers than the current framework. Further details about this can be obtained by emailing dcsdisabilities@wiltshire.gov.uk.

Housing

It is important that people can access affordable housing in the same way as any other person in Wiltshire.

A person can register with ‘Homes4Wiltshire’ from when they are 16 years old. Homes4Wiltshire has an easy read application form that is available by contacting one of their offices in Trowbridge, Chippenham and Salisbury.

There is a directory of registered care homes in Wiltshire which support people with a disability. This is usually seen as the last option to consider.
