Everyday adults, children and their carers struggle to access their community and local area because they are unable to use standard accessible toilet facilities – something that many of us take for granted. Wiltshire Council is committed to enabling everyone within the community access to our vibrant towns, services and local amenities. We are proud to support the national Changing Places campaign.

What makes Changing Places different?

Imagine having to change your son, daughter or loved one on the floor of a public toilet - most of us would agree that this just isn’t acceptable. However this is the reality for many families, who simply have no other choice. Changing Places facilities are publicly accessible with enough space and the right equipment -including a centrally placed toilet with drop down rails, height adjustable changing bench, ceiling track hoist and a shower.

Who are they designed to be used by?

The number of people with disabilities and limiting illnesses is growing. We are all living longer therefore more people are likely to need Changing Places facilities in the future. Changing Places facilities are provided in Wiltshire for people with severe physical and learning disabilities, those undergoing rehabilitation and anyone else who due to disability or illness would benefit from using them.

The facilities are particularly valuable to our ageing community suffering from a variety of age related illnesses and those recovering from strokes. Each facility has a user friendly guide with instructions for how to use all of the equipment. If using the hoist, you will need to bring your own sling, plus any consumables you may need.

Planning a day out

Thousands of people need Changing Places facilities to help them enjoy many day to day activities in their local communities; without Changing Places they face a daily challenge to leave their homes and access our vibrant towns and amenities. There are a growing number of public Changing Places facilities in the UK. Wiltshire is leading the way in driving the change to ensure that more of our community hubs and campuses have these facilities available to our communities. To help you plan a day out, the Changing Places website www.changingplaces.org has a useful location finder to identify facilities around the country.
